For children's events, see Youth Calendar page. I Will Survive:Introduction to Wilderness Survival SkillsMay 17, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The mini-survival course is geared to give basic instructions on survival skills. This is not a Rambo survival school, but for families and individuals who may wander off the trail and get lost. It just may save your life. Participants should bring a knife, sharping stone (if they have one), wear old clothing, and pack a lunch. Participants under 12 should take the class with an adult.
15th Annual Butterfly CountFriday, May 30th 9:00 a.m. The group will count all butterflies seen. We will count three areas-Burnt Mesa, Caņon de Valle, and Camp May. Please meet at 9 AM at Burnt Mesa on State Road 4 about 2 miles east (downhill) from Ponderosa Campground on the south (right) side of the road. FREE Please contact Dorothy Hoard with questions: 662-2662 Plant Identification ClassesWednesday evenings in June, 5:30-7:30 pm Learn to identify local flowering plants, trees, shrubs, and weeds. This four-session class spends one session in the classroom. We then go into the field at three different elevations to observe plants in natural habitats. No previous experience required, only a willingness to observe and enjoy our beautiful plants.
10th Mountain Hut in SummerJuly 3-7 This trip has filled. Judy Opsahl will lead a trip to Uncle Bud's hut. The trip is designed to be of interest to both enthusiastic hikers and families. We will leave from Leadville early Friday AM July 4th for the Turquoise Lake trailhead for the hike (or drive) to Uncle Bud's, arriving early afternoon. We have chosen Uncle Bud's because there are lots of hikes one can take from there. You can go north or south along the Colorado Trail, climb Galena Mtn, 12,800 ft, or take a easy hike to Bear Lake. Holy Ghost Campout and HikeAugust 28 - September 1 Pecos Area Family Camping. Leaders: Dick and Judy Opsahl (e-mail). Join Dick and Judy Opsahl for family camping Labor Day Weekend 2008 at the Holy Ghost Campground group site (elevation 8100 ft.) from August 28 to September 1, 2008. Holy Ghost is about 75 miles from Los Alamos, an easy drive. The road to the campground is narrow but paved all the way. It's a super place with great facilities including a covered Gazebo with picnic benches under cover with seating for about 40 people. It has a hand water pump and a modern pit toilet just for the group site. There are lots of relatively flat places for tents but we will take our small RV. An excellent Gazebo set -up allows us to cook our gourmet group meals in all weather situations. Tenting areas are very close. The forest in this area is dense mature spruce with some aspen. Reminded Dick of the forests in Maine. The rub is the group size limit 8 cars or RVs and a max of 40 people. I expect the trip will fill up, so get your checks in soon. Reservations will be made with Dick and Judy and the price will be $25 per auto or RV or trailer space plus $5 per person. If the money taken in more than covers the camp cost, we will use the excess for group food. Reservations will count when we receive the checks. There are excellent hiking possibilities: Redondo, Santa Fe Baldy and Lake Peak should be day trips from the campground. Lake Katherine will be much easier from this side than from the Santa Fe Ski Basin side. For the kids there is Cave Creek. Stewart Lake is only 3 hours from the campground and 2 hours back down. To make a reservation send a check to Dick Opsahl, 141 Chamisa, Los Alamos. Dogs WILL NOT be permitted. Kids are fine. This will be a combined outing of the Los Alamos Mountaineers, PEEC, and Sierra Club Pajarito Group. |
