Compact fluorescent bulbs last 9 times as long as regular bulbs!

Swap up to 6 regular bulbs for 6 CFLs!

It's free!

You may swap:

  • up to THREE 100-watt bulbs;
  • up to TWO 75-watt bulbs;
  • and ONE 60-watt bulb.

Each bulb will be exchanged for a compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb of the same brightness.

Frequently-Asked Questions

When and where can I swap bulbs?

  • At PEEC during our regular Nature Center hours:
    Tuesday through Friday 12 - 4 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Besides my light bulbs, is there anything else I need to bring? You will need to know the name of the person to whom your County utilities are billed. We will have a list from which we will verify your residency and check off that you have received bulbs. If you are a tenant or a new utilities customer, you may need proof of address.

Do I need to live in Los Alamos to participate? Yes. The program is only for residents served by Los Alamos Public Utilities. Both homeowners and tenants may participate.

Will you swap my 40-watt bulbs? No. The goal of the program is to reduce electrical consumption by targeting high-wattage incandenscent bulbs. We can only swap the quantities and sizes of bulbs listed above.

Will you accept candelabra or other types of bulbs? We can only accept standard-sized incandescent bulbs of the wattages listed above. We do accept 3-way bulbs.

Will these bulbs work on a dimmer switch? These CFLs will not dim properly on a dimmer switch. However, CFLs that do work on a dimmer switch can be purchased at local stores.

Can I swap burned-out bulbs? Or brand new bulbs? Yes. We do not care about the condition of the bulbs.

Will the light from these CFLs look different from my old bulbs? Is it harsh or bluish? No. These bulbs produce "warm white" light. The color will not be significantly different from your old incandescents.
